NIKO DIACOU has
finished his work with AmeriCorps here and will return to his home in New York
next weekend to investigate career opportunities and continue his training in
fencing. Today his last Sunday here. He has been a good member the last two
years and a joy to have with us. We will give him a blessing after Liturgy and
honor him at Coffee Hour today.
STEWPOT
- We will be serving at the Stewpot
with St. Peter's on Saturday, August 30th.
Servers should be there around 11:15 a.m. Please come to the parking lot on the side of the building that
faces east. If it is full, you may park
on the street or in the big lot between the church (Stewpot) and the Masonic
Lodge. You can walk to the side
entrance from there. Casseroles must be
cooked and, if possible, still warm. If
you are baking a casserole and not serving, you may drop it off at Stewpot or
send it with a server. Sam Leonard has
a list of all cooks and servers. Thanks
to everyone who volunteered for this important ministry.
CHURCH SCHOOL
will begin September 7.
SS. MARY AND MARTHA WOMEN'S GROUP will meet at 12:00 on September
6th, at Biaggi's in Ridgeland for lunch and our first meeting of the year.
WHO IS CHRIST? will be the subject of three talks by Fr. Paul on September 10, 17, and 24 at 7 p.m. These will be advertised to the public and will inaugurate a new series of classes on Orthodoxy. Please begin to invite people you know who may have some interest. Titles will be The Messiah of Israel on September 10, The Son of the Living God on September 17, and The One Risen from the Dead on September 24. A flyer is attached.

WORDS OF ST. COSMAS THE
AETOLIAN:
WOMAN - My
Christian, you must love your wife as your companion, not consider her as your
slave, for she is a creature of God, just as you are. God was crucified for her
as much as for you. You call God Father, she calls Him Father, too. Both of you
have the same Faith, the same Baptism, the same Book of the Gospels, the same
Holy Communion, the same Paradise to enjoy. God does not regard her as inferior
to you.
LOVE
- If you wish to be saved, seek no other thing here in this world as
much as love. .. I have a loaf of bread to eat; you do not have. Love tells me:
Do not eat it alone, give some to your brethren and you eat the rest. ... I
open my mouth to accuse you, to tell you lies, to deceive you; but at once I
remember love and it deadens my mouth, and does not allow me to tell you lies.
I stretch out my hands to take what belongs to you, your money, all your
possessions. Love does not allow me to take them. Do you see, my brethren, what
gifts love has?
Those
of you who earn your bread by means of your toil and sweat should rejoice,
because that bread is blessed; and if you give a little of it as alms it is
reckoned as much. But those who live by means of injustice and grasping should
mourn, for what you thus acquire is cursed; and if you give alms out of these
they do not benefit you at all, being fire that consumes you.
The
Martyrs won Paradise through their blood; the Ascetics, through their ascetic
life. Now you, my brethren, who have children, how will you win Paradise? By
means of hospitality, by giving to your brothers who are poor, blind, or lame.
