When Thou, O Lord, wast baptized in the Jordan…

On January 6, Orthodox Churches celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, the event that marks the inauguration of our Lord’s ministry in the Gospels. It is an image of Our Lord’s descent from heaven to earth and even to death to redeem us and our world. The three Orthodox churches in the Jackson area celebrate this each year by blessing the waters of the Ross Barnett Reservoir and plunging a cross into it.

Participants were clergy and people from Holy Trinity and St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church, Jackson, St. Peter Orthodox Church, Madison, and Holy Resurrection, Clinton.

We were blessed this year with a beautiful sunny warm day and the sky and water and land and birds celebrated the descent of the Lord into the world. Carl Boschert of Holy Trinity swam to retrieve the Cross. Afterwards we had dinner and fellowship together at a nearby restaurant.
